If you’ve walked through your garden this week, you already know: early July is peak season here in Madison. The zinnias are finally catching up, the dahlias are budding out, and if you’ve got hydrangeas, they’re putting on their best show of the year. As a Master Gardener and florist who works with local blooms every day, this is one of my favorite months of the whole growing season. I want to help you make the most of it, whether you’re growing your own cutting garden or just want fresh flowers in your home without the work.

Why Summer Flowers Matter More Than You Think

Fresh, seasonal flowers do more than look pretty on a counter. Studies on biophilic design consistently show that fresh blooms in a home or office reduce stress and improve mood, something I think about constantly as I plan arrangements for Madison homes and businesses. And when flowers are grown or sourced locally and seasonally, they last longer, smell better, and simply feel more alive than something flown in from overseas.

What’s Blooming in Madison Gardens This Week

Here’s what I’m seeing thrive right now across Dane County gardens, including my own:
Zinnias — The workhorse of any Wisconsin cutting garden. They love our July heat and keep producing the more you cut them.
Dahlias — Just starting to bud. By late July and into August, these will be the stars of every bouquet.
Hydrangeas — Peak bloom time. Panicle varieties especially thrive in our climate and hold up beautifully as cut flowers.
Snapdragons — A cool-season bloomer that’s winding down but still worth grabbing for height and texture.
Black-Eyed Susans — A native Wisconsin wildflower that adds a wild, meadow feel to any arrangement.
Yarrow — Underrated as a filler flower, and it dries beautifully for later use.
If you’re a home gardener, this is the month to be cutting generously — most of these varieties will produce more blooms the more you harvest.

Simple Tips for Cutting and Arranging Your Own Flowers

1. Cut early in the morning, when stems are full of water and the heat of the day hasn’t stressed the plant yet.
2. Use clean, sharp shears and cut at an angle to maximize water uptake.
3. Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline — they cause bacteria growth and shorten vase life.
4. Change the water every two to three days, and re-cut stems each time for the longest-lasting arrangement.
5. Mix textures, not just colors — pair a “focal” flower like a dahlia or zinnia with a filler like yarrow and something airy like grasses or herbs.

Don’t Have Time to Grow Your Own? We’ve Got You Covered

Not everyone has the time (or the raised beds) to keep a cutting garden going all summer, that's why we offer Bouquet of the Month, a fresh flower subscription for Madison area homes and offices.
We also offer a biweekly flower refresh subscription for local homes and businesses that want fresh blooms on a regular rhythm — a favorite among Madison area offices, salons, and boutiques looking to keep their space feeling alive.

A Sweet Bonus This Week

We’re currently running our Christmas in July sale — 15% off sitewide, our largest and rarest discount of the year. It’s the perfect time to start a flower subscription, book a flower bar for a summer or Fall event, or book a floral preservation piece to be made to keep those blooms for years to come.
